  BCEL opened one branch and two new service units in Vientiane Capital

In order to facilitate customers’ convenience, Banque Pour Le Commerce Exterieur Lao (BCEL) opened one branch and two new service units in Vientiane Capital in 2009. BCEL is a State-Owned Commercial Bank with a licence from the Lao Government to provide Gold Trading Service to general customers. This new service provides investors with opportunities to trade gold in foreign markets such as Switzerland and Vietnam. Last October, BCEL held a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the foundation of BCEL as a State-Owned Commercial Bank in Donchanh Palace - Vientiane. The ceremony was attended by more than 1500 guests, including distinguished honorable guests Mr. Bouasone Bouphavanh, Prime Minister of the Lao P.D.R, Ms. Pany Yatotou, Vice President of the National Assembly of the Lao P.D.R, Mr Phouphet Khamphounvong, Governor of the Bank of the Lao PDR, the Management of the Bank of Lao PDR, as well as the Management and staff of BCEL. Another highlight of the ceremony was the official launch of BCEL’s Visa Card which is considered a new product of BCEL and reflective of BCEL’s consistent effort to meet the changing needs of the customers.

  ANZV has been awarded the “Bank of the Year”

Australia & New Zealand Bank, Vientiane (ANZV) has been awarded the “Bank of the Year” for being the most outstanding bank in Laos throughout 2009. ANZV Managing Director, Kerrod Thomas said “This award is dedicated to all our staff who have worked very hard to make ANZV, The Bank of The Year, and to all of our customers who have continued to support us. We have two branches in Vientiane (Lane Xang and Nongduang) and another branch in Pakxe district, Champassak province. We would welcome all of the Lao People to come and visit us to see how we can assist them with their banking needs”.

ANZV is a privately owned joint venture bank with its headquarters in Vientiane, the capital of the Lao PDR. ANZV was established in 1993 as the Vientiane Commercial Bank Ltd, the first and leading privately owned commercial bank in Laos. In September 2007 ANZ Bank of Australia and the IFC of the World Bank Group purchased a majority stake in the Vientiane Commercial Bank Ltd and it was renamed to ANZV.

ANZV has registered capital of USD 14 M and is 90% owned by ANZ Bank of Australia. The remaining 10% of ANZV is owned by IFC of the World Bank Group.

ANZV offers services to all customers in the Lao PDR, including local and international businesses, personal customers, NGO’s and diplomatic missions. The range of services offered by ANZV includes transaction and savings accounts, term deposits, payroll processing, debit cards, Visa debit cards, overdrafts, term loans, bank guarantees, foreign exchange, trade finance and ATM’s at branches and at convenient off site locations.

  Laos Bankers' Association extends help to victims of Typhoon Ketsana

Typhoon Ketsana has left a trail of destruction in Laos and to assist communities impacted by the disaster, LBA had on 19 October 2009, donated LAK76 million to Bank of Lao PDR. This assistance will help meet the critical needs of these communities. Typhoon Ketsana caused severe flooding and claimed lives, destroyed houses and inundated rice fields. Laos has reported 20 deaths, 135 people missing and an estimated 37,000 people displaced.
